Parable

I was reading Augie his "How to Become a Jedi" book tonight, and it says that Jedis have to leave their parents behind at a very young age to go train at the Jedi Temple and sever all ties. After telling me that he didn't want to be a Jedi anymore because he loves his Mommy and doesn't want to leave, he then asked why Jedis have to leave their homes. I came up with an overly-complicated analogy of a river, which helped a jedi's mommy's farm grow, but flooded a town further downstream, killing hundreds of people. I was going to explain that if it was a jedi's job to stop the river, he'd have to do that even though it was bad for his mommy's farm. But instead, I asked him what he thought the jedi shoudl stop the river.

"No"
"Why not?"
"Because then all the cows and animals will die and my mommy will die without water"
"Nononono. There are no animals, and your mommy's not going to die. The plants will die, and your mommy won't be able to make money from her farm, so it will be hard for her. Meanwhile, the town is flooding and hundred of people are dying. Should the Jedis stop the river?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"They should move the town to where there isn't a river."

I actually think he believed the farm was in the town, and there was just too much water, because he was talking about moving the town to somewhere where there's water, but not too much water. As in, enough for the farm, but not too much to flood.
