First, we we ran some errands and then drove to the Brooklyn Children's Museum to meet Sean, Jordana, and Barnaby. It was my first, time and it's the best children's museum I've ever been to. Augie spent about half an hour just playing in this pit with fake sand (shredded cork). His favorite part was a big MTA bus you could pretend to drive.
After the museum, we drove to a playground in Flushing Meadows, which was really great. It had the biggest play structure I've ever seen, and these crazy swings that were like full-body chairs you got strapped into. It let him go higher without getting nervous. I'm pretty sure that his stomach dropped a couple times which made him giggle and say it was too high.
When we first got to the park, the first thing he did was run onto the playstructure and he ended up at a tall twisty slide. Without hesitation he slid down it. Later on, when he came up to the same slide, I think he was going to go down again, but a little jerk around his age or a little older came running up and started tryign to force him down. Like aggressively, very intentionally trying to push him down the slide-- while Augie was standing up. Aside from yelling at the kid (his mom yelled too, but the kid ignored her) all I could do was grab Augie's leg through the bar though I'm not sure what purpose it would have served if this kid had won out. Eventually he stopped. Augie, of course was crying and I had to go up there to get him. He said he wanted to go home and I wanted to kill that kid. The mom, who at first told the kid he had to go home now eventually let him stay and play because she was able to drag him over to Augie, screaming. and get him to scream "sorry." Parenting award, really.
Eventually Augie calmed down and we were able to stay at the park, though he didn't go on the play structure again.
When the park closed at 6, we headed over to a carnival I had seen in Rego Park. This was the highlight of the day. Deb joined us, and Augie went on:
the ferris wheel (3 times)
the teacups (by himself - 2 times)
a firetruck ride (2 times)
a small roller coaster (once - did not like it - "too fast". Didn't cry on the ride, but asked for it to be stopped)
big spinning strawberry with me
airplane ride
He would get off one ride and then just start running to the next. He was really happy. Rides were 3 or 4 tickets each, and we burned through 52 tickets in no time. Also, our plan to win Augie a prize by being the only 2 people in one of those skee-ball race carnival games failed when more people joined just before we started. So I won him a puppy by knocking over 3 bottles.
